Bruce was born in Seattle, Washington, and grew up in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Portales, New Mexico, and Lebanon, Oregon. He graduated from Lebanon Union High School in 1973. He entered the US Military Academy at West Point that summer, and graduated in 1977. He served eleven years as an Infantry officer, with duty assignments in Korea (twice), Georgia, Kansas, and California.
After leaving active duty, he attended Atkinson Graduate School of Management at Willamette University, graduating in 1990. He has worked in several industries and small businesses, and in 1998 formed his own company, owning and operating PostalAnnex+ unit franchise stores in east Portland. He has been active in the Gateway Area and Midway Business Associations, and served as President of GABA.
Before opening his own business, he was an avid rugby football player and referee. He enjoys skiing, white water rafting, camping and hiking.
Bruce is married to Tonia with two step-children and three grandchildren.
